Expect big things from British singer-songwriter Daniel Etherton this year. Ahead of the release of his debut EP Rewrote It, Milk Bar has had an exclusive opportunity to listen to the magnetically smooth new track ‘Mona Lisa’.
Fusing pop sensibilities with a soulful undertone, ‘Mona Lisa’ carries a sense of nostalgia and warmth punctuated with stirring lyrics. The jury may be out on whether the song is an ode to the iconic Renaissance portrait by Leonardo de Vinci or whether it is a mere symbol of being “spellbound” and “mystified” by beauty and intoxication.
Straddling both a music and art history background, Daniel Etherton shares that his latest single is ‘synonymous with who I am, what I do – what I love!’
The song is an easy listen with a track time of just over three minutes (3:13 to be precise). Filled with impassioned vocals typifying the artist’s love and admiration of a painting that has captured the minds, hearts and souls of many onlookers for centuries. Lyrics like “As if I saw the Mona Lisa, I just didn’t want to leave ya …” and “Would you risk this room? Would you risk your life while I’m out on the run a thousand miles out the door?” illustrate the high-stakes tensions between the artist and the subject.
The Surrey-based artist has genuinely crafted a sophisticated and understated aesthetic reflective of his musical influences and art-world background. Emotionally charged artists such as Daughter, Lorde, Bon Iver, The XX and Frank Ocean are among his musical influences.
Ahead of the release of ‘Mona Lisa’, Daniel Etherton supported pop trio Flawes at The Grace, Islington.
‘Mona Lisa’ was released on 10 February 2025 and is available to stream now on all major platforms.
