Starring the uber-dreamy Paul Mescal of Normal People fame is Aftersun, a new, emotionally gripping coming-of-age drama hitting cinemas across Australia from Thursday 23 February. Written and directed by Charlotte Wells, her feature film debut is nothing short of extraordinary, winning a slew of awards in the indie film scene.
Set in the early 2000s, Aftersun is a story about Sophie, played by the talented Frankie Corio, who goes on vacation with her father Calum (Mescal) to celebrate his 31st birthday. The exotic resort and its surrounds in Turkey act as a beautiful backdrop where much of the misery and heartache take place. It soon becomes apparent that there are complexities in the relationship between Sophie and Calum. As a father, Calumn presents as a stoic, stormy and emotionally exhausted parent. The tensions further escalate when Sophie begins her own journey of self-discovery on the trip by partying with older teenagers and dabbling in romance. The pair come together to celebrate Calum’s birthday and dance to ‘Under Pressure’. At the end of the trip, they share their final moments, leaving a now-adult Sophie to ponder what happened to her father all those years ago.
Aftersun holds no punches – it is incredibly moving, teetering on the verge of devasting. The score is masterful, punctuating the melancholy that exists between father and daughter. Paul Mescal is a vision in this role, portraying his character’s rawest emotions and deepest lows with great gusto. His Academy Award nomination is well-deserved.
To celebrate the release of Aftersun, Milk Bar is giving away three FREE double passes. All you need do is email ross@milkbarmag.com with the subject line ‘Aftersun ticket giveaway’ and include your name, postal address and the cinema you intend to watch the film.
