MSO’s Sir Andrew’s Messiah

‘Tis the season to be merry and indulge in Sir Andrew’s Messiah performance at Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) this December. Over two exclusive concerts at Hamer Hall, orchestra lovers will have the opportunity to listen to the rousing classic ‘Hallelujah!’ chorus, an angelic and ethereal song that has stood the test of time – and is embedded in pop culture.
A festive favourite for young and old, Sir Andrew Davis’ new orchestra makes its triumphant return to Australia. Messiah is an English-language oratorio composed in 1741 by George Frirderic Handel and was performed in Dublin and London soon after. The text of Messiah is taken from various passages in the Old and New Testament. Beyond ‘Hallelujah!’, expect to hear the beautiful ‘Worth is the Lamb’ and ‘And the Glory of the Lord’, songs that are often played around Christmas.
Under the baton of MSO Conductor Laureate Sir Andrew Davis, the Hamer Hall concerts will feature the extraordinary vocal talents of soprano Jacqueline Porter, mezzo-soprano Catherine Carby, tenor Andrew Goodwin, and bass-baritone Christopher Richardson with the full voice of the MSO Chorus under Director Warren Trevelyan-Jones.
One of today’s most recognised and acclaimed conductors, Sir Andrew Davis’ career spans over forty-five years in which he has been the artistic leader at several of the world’s most distinguished opera and symphonic institutions. Sir Andrew has led performances at many of the world’s most important opera houses, among them the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro alla Scala, Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, Bayreuth Festival, and the major companies of Munich, Paris, San Francisco, and Santa Fe.
Punters can also attend Handel’s Messiah conducted by Benjamin Northey on Wednesday 14 December at Ballarat Civic Hall. The Thursday 15 December concert at Frankston Arts Centre is sold out.
Performances of Sir Andrew’s Messiah are on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 December at Hamer Hall. Hurry, tickets are selling fast!
