Forgotten Places

Citizen Theatre’s Forgotten Places was an immersive theatre experience not to be forgotten.

Set in the future, patrons were asked to step barefoot into a bright and somewhat absurd set filled with art, fish tanks, mirrors and little scrolls of encouragement to experience sights, sounds, smells and textiles underfoot that came with the performance.

Five performers rotated around the separate sections of the set for a different performance at each station. From singing, to movement, dance, monologues and group marshmallow eating, there was never a dull moment, but the experience as a whole lacked cohesion.

The immersive experience was created by incorporating a selection of photographic submissions from Stonnington locals with the intention of transforming these into an interactive future city where paintings, sculpture, singing, storytelling, music and colour give audiences an inspiring experience to change the way they view and interact with their local area.

Quite frankly though, if I’d not read that on the Citizen Theatre website, I’d have no idea what the underlying theme or narrative behind the sensory hoo-haa actually was. Nevertheless, the set was colourful and fun, and all the performers had great singing voices.

If you’ve never tried immersive theatre before, it was a fun and light hearted experience suitable for all ages.

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
