Thai Tiki Hut

Thai Tiki Hut, a new restaurant in High Street Northcote, is as fun to eat at as it is to say. Plus it might just provide the closet replica to Thailand Melbourne has to offer (minus the alcohol buckets).

The couple behind the place, Matt Andrews and Supatcha Todsanaithada, have combined their separate specialities to create this mini Thailand with a Tiki twist in what was once a Greek Club.

Matt has used his background in carpentry to construct just about everything you see. From paint bucket light shades to the bamboo booths with their own tin roof and chicken wire partitions - perfect for small groups to settle down in with a cold Singha.

Supatcha’s experience working in Thai restaurants has shaped a bountiful menu that offers a range of traditional dishes. Vegos take note: there is an entire section of the menu that is meat free.

Having only thrown open their doors a week ago, the team at Tiki are still settling into the service routine, but everything they do, they do with a big smile.

We started with some fish cakes ($8.90) served with sweet chilli sauce, which had a great flavour, but could have been a little bit crispier. Then some Crazy Wings ($8.90) tasty roast chicken wings with a chilli sauce that were finger lickin’ good.

But the real highlights were the mains - the Thai green curry ($14.90) was rich and creamy with the right hit of spice. The Pad Ka-Prao or chilli basil stir fry ($14.90) proved a fragrant, fresh accompaniment to the curry. Like both these dishes, many of the items on the menu can be served with whatever meat tickles your fancy.

While it’s no three hat restaurant, Thai Tiki Hut is a fun place to sit back and relax and pretend you are only a couple of hundred meters away from Maya Bay.
